Why Gender Equality Is Good for Everyone – Michael Kimmel’s TED Talk

Today, I’m writing about Michael Kimmel’s TED Talk titled “Why Gender Equality Is Good for Everyone.”
The video was uploaded on 6th Oct 2015 on the official TED YouTube channel.

Michael talks about the benefits of gender equality and how those with privilege often don’t recognize it.

He begins with a story from his college days, where he first heard:

“Privilege is invisible to those who have it.”

He explains how voices from privileged groups are taken more seriously than those from oppressed ones — a key reason why many men misinterpret feminism. Because unless they see gender, they can’t understand gender equality.

In simple words:
Men have benefited from patriarchy for generations. When women rise to equal levels, it can feel like a threat—but it’s really about balance, not blame.

Gender equality means everyone, including men, can be freer and more fulfilled.

Michael also shares solid data and real-world examples—too many to fit here.
So, I’ve kept this blog short, because the video itself explains it all much better. From stats to lived experiences, it’s worth your time.

Go watch the full video. It’s insightful, sharp, and even humorous.
